Following the publication of the QISMET Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) last month, we are now able to invite providers of both pediatric and adult diabetes education to apply for certification.
As all involved in the commissioning of healthcare endeavour to cut costs while providing effective services, the case for empowering individuals to do what they personally can to 'self manage' and 'self care' becomes ever more compelling.
Each QISMET certificated organisation has successfully met specified tried and tested QISMET standards that cover all necessary dimensions to produce successful outcomes in the delivery of high quality programmes.
A requirement that potential providers are QISMET certificated can save commissioners time and money, as many areas covered by the QISMET standard address questions asked in pre-qualifying commissioning processes. In addition, as the costs of QISMET certification are borne by the provider there is no financial or time cost to commissioning bodies.
Go to the West Midlands Project page to see how QISMET Certification is being incporporated as part of the commissioning requirements for self management provison to ensure maintaining the quality where 'any qualified provider' can deliver this service.
Requiring QISMET certification of local diabetes education providers can also assist commissioners meet their responsibilites to NICE Diabetes in Adults Standard. Find out how.
"I welcome the timely development of the Diabetes Self Management Education Standard by QISMET. Although developed around Diabetes, I believe it is applicable to all long term condition education programmes. I recommend that those involved in commissioning and provision of education seriously consider the benefits of providers seeking QISMET certification against the DSME standard, a practical tool, which covers all aspects of managing and running high quality education programmes. Undertaking certification against the DSME Standard enables providers to demonstrate that they are working to agreed ‘best practice’ and that their ability to do so has been verified by an independent body (QISMET). Development of the DSME Standard supports one of the three key drivers for the QIPP long Term Conditions work stream which aims to empower patients to maximise self care, self management and choice. Ensuring that we provide high standards of self management education and training is key to achieving the shift in power we need for patients to take charge of their own health."
