Following the publication of the QISMET Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) last month, we are now able to invite providers of both pediatric and adult diabetes education to apply for certification.
The development of the Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) Quality Standard is now complete and the Standard was published on Monday 14 November 2011 - World Diabetes Day.
The DSME Quality Standard is a practical tool with clear observable and measurable requirements. It enables providers to benchmark themselves and, by being certified against the Standard, to demonstrate that they meet their responsibility in relation to the very first NICE Diabetes quality statement that,
“People with diabetes and/or their carers receive a structured educational programme that fulfils the nationally agreed criteria from the time of diagnosis, with annual review and access to ongoing education.”
QISMET is now accepting applications for certification against the DSME Quality Standard. We are offering an 'earlybird' discount of 20% off the certification fee for any Diabetes Self Management Education providers who apply for certification before 28 February 2012.

QISMET currently certificates against Stepping Stones to Quality (SS2Q) which is the prototype quality mark certification scheme developed is for lay led self management programmes delivered under licence from Stanford University, commonly known in England as the Expert Patients Programme.
SS2Q and the ‘early bird’ SS2Q Certification offer (open until 31 December 2011).

SS2Q is currently being used in the West Midlands where a number of PCTs have made certification via QISMET a criterion for commissioning organisations that provide CDSMP courses. The first organisations to apply for certification have been audited and have all successfully achieved certification. See more on the West Midlands Project
At QISMET we are keenly aware that the pace of change in the type of programme and diversity of services offered within the self management and self care arena is accelerating. QISMET is proactive in its response to these changes and is now embarking on the development of a 'Universal Standard' to meet the needs of newly emerging programmes, providers and services which would not be able to be certificated under either existing standards. As with all QISMET's developments we are seeking to involve those with specialist knowledge, which means people living with long term conditions and people working in the field of self management and self care. Consultation on the Universal Standard opened on 2 February - please go to the Universal Standard page for details.

Organisations that achieve certification will carry the QISMET quality mark pictured here. QISMET's aim is that over time this will become as familiar within the self management education arena as the BSI kitemark is to industry.
