Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME)

The new QISMET Diabetes Self Management Quality Standard, which was officially published on 14 November 2011 - World Diabetes Day, has been well received.

Sir John Oldham National Clinical Lead for Quality and Productivity at the Department of Health said:

"I welcome the timely development of the Diabetes Self Management Education Standard by QISMET. Although developed around Diabetes, I believe it is applicable to all long term condition education programmes. I recommend that those involved in commissioning and provision of education seriously consider the benefits of providers seeking QISMET certification against the DSME standard, a practical tool, which covers all aspects of managing and running high quality education programmes. Undertaking certification against the DSME Standard enables providers to demonstrate that they are working to agreed ‘best practice’ and that their ability to do so has been verified by an independent body (QISMET). Development of the DSME Standard supports one of the three key drivers for the QIPP long Term Conditions work stream which aims to empower patients to maximise self care, self management and choice. Ensuring that we provide high standards of self management education and training is key to achieving the shift in power we need for patients to take charge of their own health."

Rebecca Owen, Diabetes Education Lead, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, York, commented:

"We're so glad QISMET has come along, as we've been trying to figure out how to get accredited for some time now."
